What is a jjimjilbang, and why do Koreans love it?
A jjimjilbang (찜질방) is a Korean spa. You soak in hot baths, sweat in heated rooms, then lie on the warm floor with a snack. Families, couples, friends and students all go, often for hours. It is where Koreans recover after a long week, a long trip, or a long exam period.
- Hot and cold baths separated by gender (bathing areas are without clothes).
- Dry sauna rooms at different temperatures, from warm to very hot.
- Shared lounge areas where everyone wears the spa clothes you get at the entrance.
- The classic snacks: baked eggs (maekbanseok gyeran) and sweet rice drink (sikhye). Try both.

First-timer tips
- Shy about the baths? Bathing areas are separated by gender and you go without clothes, like all Korean spas. The lounge, sauna rooms and pools are mixed and you wear spa clothes or a swimsuit, so you can enjoy most of it without the baths.
- Bring a swimsuit for the pools, and a swim cap or hat for the water park. Rentals are available too.
- Shower before you enter any bath or pool. It is the number-one rule in Korean spas.
- Tie up long hair and do not put towels in the bath water.
- Tuesday visit? Everything closes at 18:00, so go early.
