How to Extend Your D-2 Student Visa in Korea

Your permission to stay in Korea has an end date. If you are still studying, you must extend it before it expires. Missing the deadline can mean fines or worse.
When to apply
- Check the expiry date on your ARC today and save it in your calendar.
- You can usually apply up to 4 months before it expires.
- You must apply before the expiry date, while you are in Korea.
How to apply
- Group application: many universities collect extension applications from students each semester. This is often the easiest way. Ask your international office.
- On your own: apply online on HiKorea, or book a visit to the immigration office.
Documents you usually need
- Application form
- Passport and ARC
- Certificate of enrollment
- Transcript
- Proof of residence (lease or dorm confirmation)
- Fee (usually KRW 60,000)
- Bank statement, if your grades are low or the office asks
Unpaid health insurance premiums can cause problems. Make sure your NHIS payments are up to date.
If you miss the deadline
Staying after your permission expires is called overstaying. Fines start from the day after expiry and grow with time. Serious cases can lead to a departure order or deportation, and a ban on returning to Korea. If you have missed it, contact the immigration office or call 1345 immediately.
While you wait: keep your application receipt with your passport, and avoid travelling abroad until your extension is approved.
