Scholarships in Korea: GKS and University Scholarships Explained

Studying in Korea can cost much less than you think. The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) covers almost everything, and many universities cut tuition for good TOPIK scores.
What is GKS?
GKS is the Korean government's scholarship for international students, run by NIIED. It has an undergraduate program and a graduate program.
- Round-trip economy airfare
- Full tuition (NIIED pays up to KRW 5 million per semester; the university waives the rest)
- One year of Korean language training (students with TOPIK 5 or 6 can skip it)
- A monthly living allowance of around KRW 1 million or more
Two ways to apply

You can apply to only one track in the same year. Applying to both disqualifies you from both. The graduate program usually opens around February.
Applying through the embassy track
The Korean embassy in your country announces the embassy track on its notice board, usually in late summer. Places per country are limited, so also consider the university track. Start watching your embassy's notices from August.
University scholarships in Busan
Many Busan universities reduce tuition based on TOPIK level or English test scores. Some offer large discounts or even full waivers for high TOPIK levels. Every school has its own rules, so compare the scholarship, dorm and meal costs together.
Tips to improve your chances
- Take TOPIK early. Each level opens more scholarships.
- Prepare your documents early: transcripts, recommendation letters and a clear study plan.
- Check deadlines every year. They can change.
